2hrs Play, Interval : 10mins

Written by: Vivek Apte

Synopsis:

In the long and rich tradition of Greek Theatre, Oedipus Rex, a play by Sophocales holds a very unique significance. Aadipashya is a Marathi adaptation of this Classic in the ‘Keertan Shailee’.

Aadipashya is a story of a disabled yet a warrior king who craves for the knowledge of truth and when the truth is revealed to him it disrupts his whole existence. He comes to know that he is the murderer of his own father and something else.... which is even more shattering! But he faces every truth gallantly and always prefers the pain of Knowledge to the bliss of Ignorance. That raises him above all and any of us.

Keertan is a very ancient temple tradition of Maharashtra, having its roots in the Indian mythology. It is an art of attaining the spiritual experience through story- telling, song and dance. It’s the same thing what the Theatre is all about!

Aadipashya is an attempt to amalgamate two great traditions of story telling (Greek Tragedy and Keertan), and evolve a more interesting style, which will give a new flavor to the modern audience.
Aadipashya has successfully completed 75 shows all over India.

Writers Note...
Oedipus Rex, written by the celebrated Greek Dramatist, Sophocles, was staged in Greece, in 429 BC. Soon it earned the status of a World Classic. Till today, the play has been translated in nearly 100 languages. Over 150 scholars have been awarded Doctorates for their research on the play. Universities teaching Dramatics proudly include `Oedipus Rex’ in their syllabus.

Keertan, an ancient temple tradition of South-Central India, is the oldest form of Story telling and origin of the theatre in the region. It is essentially a one-man-show. One finds many similarities between Greek and Indian mythologies. There is direct interaction between Deities, Humans and Demons & there are curses, blessings and oracles. So while writing Aadipashya I set aside ` Unity of Time & Space’ in the Greek Theatre and ` Solo Performance’ in the keertan. That probably makes Aadipashya a 125 minutes play.

Director’s Note
Aadipashya is a story of a disabled yet a warrior king who craves for the knowledge of truth. When the truth is revealed to him it disrupts his whole existence. He realizes that running away from the things he never wanted to happen was in fact entering the trap of destiny. Still he faces the truth gallantly and prefers the pain of Knowledge to the bliss of Ignorance. That raises him above all and any of us. Keertan has its roots in the Indian mythology. It is an art of attaining spiritual experience through story- telling, devotional songs and dance. It's the same thing what the Theatre is all about! Aadipashya is an attempt to amalgamate two great traditions of story telling, Greek Tragedy and Keertan. And evolve a more interesting style, which will give a new flavor to the modern audience. In Marathi the word `Prayog’ is not a synonym of a ‘Show’ but in fact it is a synonym of an `Experiment’. That is what I have tried to achieve in Aadipashya.
